Baptist Hospital Now Offers Latest Heart Valve Treatment

Pensacola, Fla. (May 21, 2025)Baptist Hospital now offers TriClip™, the latest innovation in treating tricuspid regurgitation or TR. TR is a condition that causes serious symptoms that include swelling, extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing and diminished physical function. The first procedure at Baptist was performed in May.

“Baptist is the trusted leader in structural heart interventions, having performed more than 2,000 structural heart procedures,” said Luther Carter, interventional cardiologist. “Our experienced heart and vascular team has an unwavering commitment to excellence and an established legacy of pioneering innovative procedures in the Northwest Florida region.”

Typically, TriClip provides relatively fast relief with minimal recovery time, allowing patients to return to their individual optimum level of physical ability. While each patient is different, they are typically advised to avoid strenuous activity for about a week, then can return to normal activities.

The tricuspid valve is often called the “forgotten valve.” Because it has been considered a secondary issue or a consequence of left-sided heart disease rather than a problem in its own right, it has received less attention than the mitral and aortic valves in both research and clinical practice. Until recently, there were few effective and safe treatment options, and surgery presented a high risk, especially in patients with advanced disease. Therapies like TriClip focus on the forgotten valve and give patients relief from debilitating symptoms to improve quality of life.

The multidisciplinary heart and vascular team at Baptist offers the highest standard in cardiovascular care by bringing together a patient-centered focus, clinical expertise and leading-edge technology to deliver life-changing outcomes.
